PPP condemns harassment of activists
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan People’s Party on Monday condemned harassment of party activists and demanded immediate release of all arrested party activists including parliamentarians. “The regime’s onslaught against the political parties and civil society groups reflects its fear of growing public unrest over the imposition of martial law,” said the party’s Central Information Secretary Sherry Rehman in a statement. Rehman claimed that 6,500 activists of the party had been arrested earlier following the November 3 martial law, while on Sunday the security agencies rounded up another 2,000 workers and leaders from across Sindh to harass them. Those arrested on Sunday included Leader of the Opposition in Senate Mian Raza Rabbani and MNA Yousaf Talpur. “So panicked is the regime that it cannot take lightly a single public protests against the November 3 draconian orders. It is amazing that the entire country’s security forces have been deployed to clampdown the protestors rising up across the country,” she said. Demanding immediate release of the party workers as well as freedom for activists of other political parties and civil society, lawyers and the judges, Rehman said that each act of violation of human rights would result in greater public unrest and fuel violent confrontation. “Being the biggest political party of the country, the PPP will take this cause to all corners of the country and the world. This martial law is simply unacceptable,” she said. staff report
